The paper analyzes the relationship between foreign institutional ownership (FIO) and bank misconduct in China. Using hand-collected data on regulatory enforcement actions (EAs) against banks from the China Banking and Insurance Regulatory Commission over the years 2008-2019, we find that FIO is in general associated with lower amount of misconduct fines. The findings remain robust to adopting the coarsened exact matching to construct comparable treatment and control groups. We further investigate whether foreign directors can play a role in preventing costly misconduct episodes and show that foreign representation on the banks’ boards of directors significantly reduces the bank misconduct risk. Our paper provides evidence for the monitor role of FIO in the Chinese banking sector reform and sheds light on the positive implications of financial openness in emerging markets.

梁晓琴，会计学博士，中国注册会计师非执业会员，现就读于对外经济贸易大学国际商学院。研究方向为跨国公司与对外直接投资、会计信息与资本市场、企业标准化。截至目前，已在《经济研究》《外国经济与管理》《Australian Accounting Review》《国际商务（对外经济贸易大学学报）》等期刊发表论文6篇。
